US President Donald Trump has joked that if Americans ever become annoyed or angry with him, he would move to Israel and become the country’s prime minister.
Trump made the remarks in an interview with Fox News on Tuesday (November 3), the day of the US midterm elections.
Speaking on Fox News’ programme ‘Fox & Friends’, Trump said, “My popularity in Israel is at 99 per cent. If the people of the United States ever get fed up with me, I’ll move to Israel and become their prime minister.”
In the same interview, Trump also revealed that he had reached an agreement with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu under which Washington would stop providing $4 billion in annual aid to Israel after the end of this year.
According to Trump, Israel no longer needs the assistance, while some Democrats and left-wing politicians had been using the funding as a tool to criticise Republicans.
“Netanyahu and I have reached an understanding regarding financial assistance to Israel. We give Israel $4 billion a year. A few months ago, we agreed to end this assistance,” Trump said.
He added, “We have already agreed that no more money will be given to Israel by the end of this year. However, if Israel needs assistance, we will help.”
