The death toll from floods, hill runoff and landslides in southeastern Bangladesh has climbed to 54, while 39 others have been injured, according to the latest update from the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief.
The disasters have affected seven districts—Khagrachhari, Rangamati, Bandarban, Cox’s Bazar, Chattogram, Moulvibazar and Habiganj.
Among the fatalities, Cox’s Bazar recorded the highest number with 31 deaths, followed by Chattogram (13), Bandarban (6), Rangamati (3) and Moulvibazar (1).
Of the 39 injured, 24 were reported in Cox’s Bazar, 12 in Chattogram, two in Bandarban and one in Khagrachhari.
According to the ministry, the flooding has affected 59 upazilas, 334 unions and 12 municipalities, disrupting the lives of thousands of people.
To shelter displaced residents, authorities have opened 1,049 emergency shelters, where 38,422 people are currently taking refuge as rescue, relief and rehabilitation efforts continue.
The government is maintaining relief distribution and emergency assistance for communities affected by flooding, hill runoff and landslides.
Meanwhile, Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Husain said the government has adopted the highest level of preparedness to ensure uninterrupted healthcare services in flood-hit areas.
Speaking at a press briefing at the Secretariat on Monday, the minister said the leave of healthcare workers in vulnerable districts has been cancelled to maintain round-the-clock medical services.
He said special healthcare services are now being provided in 11 flood-affected districts—Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Bandarban, Rangamati, Khagrachhari, Feni, Noakhali, Lakshmipur, Chandpur, Cumilla and Brahmanbaria—to ensure timely treatment and emergency medical support for affected residents.
The government said it will continue to monitor the situation closely and strengthen relief, rescue and healthcare operations as needed.
