Bangladesh’s Election Commission (EC) is set to launch voter registration and National Identity (NID) card services for expatriate Bangladeshis in Singapore, Bahrain and Sweden, expanding its overseas voter registration programme.
According to EC sources on Tuesday, the initiative was confirmed through three separate government orders issued by the Election Commission Secretariat.
To formally inaugurate the services, three election commissioners will visit the respective countries in phases.
Under the official schedule, Election Commissioner Abdur Rahman Masud will visit Bahrain from July 15 to 21, where he will inaugurate the voter registration programme and hold meetings with members of the Bangladeshi expatriate community.
Election Commissioner Anwarul Islam Sarkar will travel to Sweden from July 30 to August 5, while Election Commissioner Brig. Gen. (Retd.) Abul Fazal Md. Sanaullah will visit Singapore from July 29 to August 4. The expenses for the visits will be covered under the EC’s IDEA Project-2.
The Election Commission had earlier introduced overseas voter registration and NID services in the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Italy, the United Kingdom, Kuwait, Qatar, Malaysia, Australia and Canada in July last year.
