Prime Minister’s Information and Broadcasting Adviser Jahed Ur Rahman has said that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman may reshuffle the cabinet if he believes any member is not performing as expected. This could involve reallocating ministerial portfolios or appointing a new person to replace an underperforming cabinet member. However, no final decision has been made on whether such changes will take place within the government’s first 180 days or at a later stage.
Speaking at the government’s regular press briefing at the Secretariat on Tuesday (July 21), Jahed Ur Rahman said that the prime minister remains committed to ensuring effective governance and improving government performance whenever necessary.
“The Prime Minister has formed a cabinet and an advisory council. From my conversations with him, I understand that if he ever feels someone is not performing well, he will not hesitate to reassign portfolios or appoint someone new if needed. Ultimately, his responsibility is to serve the people, and if there is an opportunity to improve government decisions, he will do so,” Jahed Ur Rahman said.
He added that it is still unclear whether any cabinet reshuffle would take place after the first 180 days of the government or at a later time.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s cabinet was formed on February 17. In addition to the prime minister, it currently consists of 24 cabinet ministers, 23 state ministers, and 10 advisers holding ministerial or state minister status. Under the Rules of Business, the prime minister is responsible for assigning ministerial portfolios.
Responding to a question about reports of a possible cabinet reshuffle within the first 180 days of the BNP-led government, the information adviser reiterated that no decision has yet been finalized.
During the briefing, Jahed Ur Rahman also announced that the government is forming a panel of lawyers to oversee legal measures against cyberbullying and misinformation. A formal government notification regarding the panel is expected to be issued later this week.
The press conference also highlighted the government’s recent activities and was attended by Chief Information Officer Syed Abdal Ahmed of the Department of Information.
