The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has officially launched its electronic income tax return (e-Return) service for the 2026–27 tax year, making online filing mandatory for most individual taxpayers in a major push toward digitalisation and transparency.
From July 22, taxpayers can submit their returns through the official e-Tax platform. The system, introduced in 2021, has grown rapidly in popularity. In the 2025–26 tax year alone, nearly 4.7 million people successfully filed their returns online—a record high.
The NBR has made e-Return submission compulsory for regular individual taxpayers. However, certain groups are exempt and can still submit paper returns, including:
Senior citizens aged 65 and above
Persons with disabilities (with valid certification)
Bangladeshis living abroad
Representatives filing on behalf of deceased taxpayers
Foreign nationals working in Bangladesh
Additionally, taxpayers facing technical or registration issues may submit paper returns with prior approval from tax authorities.
Taxpayers can pay their dues directly through the e-Tax portal using: Bank transfers ,Debit/credit cards & Mobile financial services like bKash, Rocket, and Nagad.
Once the return is submitted, users can instantly download their acknowledgement receipt and income tax certificate. To assist users, the NBR has set up support through a call centre (09643717171) and other digital channels during office hours on working days.
Starting this tax year, taxpayers who file their returns between July and September will receive a 5% tax rebate on their net payable amount, capped at Tk 25,000.
Returns submitted after September will not qualify for the rebate, while those filed after December may incur additional taxes under existing laws.
The NBR says the move aims to simplify tax compliance, reduce paperwork, and improve efficiency. Taxpayers are encouraged to file early to benefit from incentives and avoid penalties.
