A canal re-excavation project in Gaibandha has returned more than Tk 41 lakh to the state treasury after being completed well below its allocated budget, officials said.
The project involved the re-excavation of the Nakai Canal in Palashbari upazila, undertaken as part of the government’s nationwide initiative to boost agricultural productivity, reduce waterlogging, and expand irrigation.
According to the Upazila Project Implementation Office, a total of Tk 20,603,080 was allocated for the project. However, only Tk 16,412,252 was spent to re-excavate almost 4.92 kilometres of the canal in Harinathpur union.
The remaining Tk 4,190,828 was returned to the government treasury in line with financial regulations.
Aminul Islam Bulbul said the project was completed with quality workmanship while maintaining strict cost control through effective planning, monitoring, and coordination.
Work began on May 12, with authorities closely supervising construction quality and expenditure throughout implementation to ensure transparency and efficiency. All costs—including labour, machinery, and transportation—were settled before returning the surplus funds.
The re-excavation has restored the canal’s natural water flow, improving drainage and significantly reducing waterlogging during the monsoon.
Local residents say the canal now drains water from more than 20 nearby wetlands (beels), enabling farmers to cultivate Aman paddy in previously unsuitable areas. The restored waterway is also expected to enhance fish habitats and support the local economy.
Upazila Project Implementation Officer Abdus Salam confirmed that no public funds were wasted and all surplus money was duly returned through official procedures.
UNO Aminul Islam Bulbul emphasized that public funds are a trust and must be used responsibly, reaffirming the administration’s commitment to accountability and efficient use of resources for public welfare.
