‘Moderate’ Air Quality After a Long Stretch of Pollution
After a prolonged period of being ranked among the world’s most polluted cities, Dhaka has finally received some welcome news. According to the latest data from the IQAir air quality monitoring platform, the city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) stands at 60, placing it 54th on the list of the world’s most polluted cities.
Known for its persistent blanket of dust, smoke, and pollution, Dhaka is today experiencing comparatively cleaner air, with air quality classified as “Moderate.”
Other cities currently recording moderate air quality include Hanoi (Vietnam), Santiago (Chile), Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), Dubai (United Arab Emirates), Kobe and Osaka (Japan), Cairo (Egypt), Karachi (Pakistan), Nairobi (Kenya), Shanghai (China), Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), and Seattle (United States).
According to IQAir’s AQI classification: 0–50: Good air quality, 51–100: Moderate air quality, 101–150: Unhealthy for sensitive groups
151–200: Unhealthy, 201–300: Very unhealthy and 301 and above: Hazardous
The improvement offers a welcome respite for Dhaka residents, who are more accustomed to seeing the capital listed among cities with unhealthy or hazardous air quality.
