A former leader of the Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), Atikul Islam Sagar, 28, was hacked to death in Bogura’s Sadar upazila early Wednesday night. Police have taken a woman into custody on suspicion of involvement in the killing.
The attack took place in the Chalitabari area of Bogura Sadar Upazila at around 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday.
The victim, Atikul Islam Sagar, was the son of Shahadat Mondol of Panchbaria village under Shakharia Union and previously served as the convener of the Shakharia Union JCD.
According to the victim’s family and local residents, Sagar had been involved in a long-standing dispute with neighboring families. He had been living with his wife, Marjia Khatun, at his in-laws’ home in Chalitabari village.
Marjia Khatun said that around 2:30 a.m., while family members were eating inside the house, Sagar was standing in the courtyard. Hearing a commotion outside, she came out and saw a group of 20 to 25 people, allegedly led by Sagar’s cousin Julhas, breaking through the tin gate and entering the property. The attackers then allegedly assaulted Sagar with sharp weapons.
She said Sagar tried to flee but collapsed on the road after sustaining severe injuries. Local residents rushed him to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura, where doctors declared him dead.
Marjia also alleged that when she screamed for help, the attackers threatened her. She further claimed that while Sagar was being transported to the hospital by auto-rickshaw, the assailants followed them near Manikchak’s Shaon Bari area and continued to intimidate them.
Bogura Sadar Police Station Investigation Officer Mahfuz Alam said police responded to the scene immediately after receiving the report. Preliminary findings suggest that the killing was linked to previous enmity.
Police have taken a woman identified as Shapla into custody for questioning in connection with the incident.
The officer also said that Sagar had six criminal cases filed against him, including allegations related to assault, narcotics, and illegal weapons. Police are conducting a thorough investigation and are working to identify and arrest those involved.
