Bangladesh is gradually emerging as a promising destination for international medical treatment, supported by skilled physicians, modern healthcare facilities, and comparatively affordable medical costs.
Although the country’s medical tourism sector is still in its early stages, recent success stories indicate significant potential to attract foreign patients, particularly from South Asia and neighboring countries.
A landmark milestone came on 14 December 2023, when Karma Dema, a 23-year-old college student from Bhutan, became the first officially recognized foreign patient to receive treatment in Bangladesh under a government-approved medical visa.
Karma Dema had been diagnosed with nasal cavity cancer and initially received treatment at India’s renowned Tata Memorial Hospital.
Although the cancer was successfully treated, complications from radiotherapy caused severe tissue damage, leading to the destruction of her nose.
Despite undergoing two reconstructive surgeries in India, doctors were unable to restore her nose successfully.
She later travelled to Bangladesh and was admitted to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka.
There, a team of Bangladeshi surgeons performed an eight-hour complex microsurgical reconstruction, successfully rebuilding her nose.
Following recovery, she returned to Bhutan in good health.
Her case marked not only a remarkable medical achievement but also a historic beginning for Bangladesh’s medical visa programme.
Growing Opportunity for Bangladesh
Bangladesh possesses several competitive advantages that could help develop a regional healthcare destination:

Experts believe Bangladesh can significantly expand its medical tourism industry by adopting a coordinated national strategy.
Key priorities include:
– Establishing a dedicated Medical Tourism Authority.

– Developing partnerships with neighboring governments and insurance providers.
-Expanding specialized centres of excellence.
-Training healthcare professionals in international patient management.

The successful treatment of Bhutanese patient Karma Dema demonstrated that Bangladesh possesses both the medical expertise and clinical capability to treat complex international cases.
