Bangladesh is passing through a critical political and social juncture. At this moment, the country needs no deeper division, but justice, security, honesty, mutual respect and responsible leadership. .
Political disagreement is a natural and necessary part of democracy. However, political differences must never become a source of conflict, revenge, violence, corruption or state instability.
Bangladesh urgently needs a new national consensus based on justice, ethical values, constitutional principles and the common interests of its people.
The values demonstrated by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in establishing a pluralistic and justice-based society in Madinah, and his example of forgiveness and reconciliation following the Conquest of Makkah, offer important moral lessons for societies facing conflict and division.
These principles can provide valuable guidance—not as a call to impose religious rule, but as a source of universal ethical values such as justice, trust, accountability, peaceful coexistence and respect for human dignity.
No Place for Extremism
There should be no place in Bangladesh for extremism, political violence, religious hatred or revenge.
Islam emphasises justice, moderation, restraint, human dignity and peace. The Qur’an says:
“Do not let the hatred of a people cause you to depart from justice. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness.”
— Surah Al-Ma’idah 5:8
Therefore, hatred and revenge against political opponents, dissenting citizens or religious communities must not guide the state. Justice, the rule of law and dialogue must be the foundation of national life.
Justice Must Be the Foundation of the State
Bangladesh needs a smart, effective and independent justice system in which the same law applies equally to the powerful and the ordinary citizen.
No one should be above the law because of political identity, wealth, administrative influence or social status. At the same time, no citizen should be subjected to harassment, politically motivated cases, arbitrary arrest or punishment simply because of political affiliation, past allegations or disagreement with those in power.
Law enforcement must be based on evidence, due process, impartial investigation and justice. Criminal responsibility is individual.
It is neither fair nor consistent with justice to treat every member of a political party or every supporter of a particular ideology as collectively guilty.
End Political and Social Division
The people of Bangladesh must not be permanently divided on the basis of political affiliation, ideology, religion, region or social identity.
Political competition will naturally exist in a democracy. However, there must also be space for cooperation and consensus on issues of national interest.
One of the important lessons of the social order established in Madinah was the recognition of the rights, responsibilities and security of different communities within a shared framework of social coexistence.
Bangladesh also needs a national consensus based on the following principles:
The safety and dignity of every citizen must be protected.
Religious freedom and mutual respect must be upheld.
The right to peaceful political expression must be guaranteed.
Violence, terrorism and attacks on the state must be dealt with firmly under the law.
Peaceful political disagreement must not be treated as a crime.
Politics Must Serve the People, Not Power
State power is a trust.
The Qur’an says:
“Indeed, Allah commands you to render trusts to whom they are due and, when you judge between people, to judge with justice.”
— Surah An-Nisa 4:58
In light of this principle, the primary purpose of political leadership should be to ensure the safety, economic wellbeing, education, healthcare, employment and dignity of the people.
No political party or group should be able to use state institutions, the administration, law-enforcement agencies or economic power against the people. Strong mechanisms of accountability are therefore essential.
End Corruption and the Abuse of Power
Corruption destroys the economy, undermines justice and erodes public trust.
Effective action must be taken against the use of public office for personal enrichment, the abuse of political influence for economic gain, the illegal occupation of public resources and other unlawful financial activities.
However, anti-corruption campaigns must also be based on evidence, due process and impartial justice. Allegations of corruption must never be used as instruments of political revenge.
Public Safety Must Be the State’s First Priority
Protecting the life, property, dignity and security of every citizen is a fundamental responsibility of the state.
No innocent person should be subjected to unlawful killing, enforced disappearance, torture, abduction or oppression.
At the same time, anyone involved in crime, terrorism or organised violence—regardless of political or social identity—must be held accountable through due legal process.
Justice for all. Safety first.
If these principles become central to state policy, public confidence in institutions can gradually be restored.
The Lessons of Forgiveness and Reconciliation
Following the Conquest of Makkah, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) demonstrated the power of forgiveness and reconciliation rather than allowing society to remain trapped in endless revenge.
This does not mean ignoring crimes or denying justice. Rather, it means ensuring justice while preventing society from becoming trapped in an endless cycle of retaliation.
For Bangladesh, the path should be:
Justice → Truth → Accountability → Compensation and Rehabilitation → National Reconciliation
Without such a process, political revenge can continue from one generation to the next.
The Need for Honest and Competent Leadership
Bangladesh needs leaders who combine honesty, competence, patriotism, responsibility and humanity.
Leadership should not be determined solely by party loyalty or personal connections. The following qualities must be given priority:
Integrity
Competence
Experience
A record of public service
Administrative ability
Moral character
Commitment to the national interest
In Islamic ethics, leadership is not merely a position of honour. It is an amanah—a trust—and a responsibility for which one must be held accountable.
The Media Must Serve the People
A free media is essential for democracy. However, freedom must be accompanied by responsibility.
Media outlets should not become blind instruments of foreign powers, political groups or narrow economic interests. At the same time, the media must not spread misinformation, propaganda or division against the interests of the people.
The responsibilities of the media include:
Publishing verified information;
Exposing corruption and injustice;
Giving citizens a voice;
Maintaining a responsible balance between national and public interests;
Rejecting rumours, hate speech and incitement.
An independent media is necessary, but independence must go hand in hand with professional ethics and public responsibility.
Religious Harmony and National Development
Bangladesh’s long-term development requires harmony—not unnecessary conflict—between religious values and national progress.
Islam encourages knowledge, education, justice, hard work, trustworthiness, compassion and social responsibility. At the same time, the state must ensure the religious freedom, dignity and security of all citizens.
Religion must not be used as a weapon of political hatred. Equally, religious values can make a positive contribution to national ethics, human development and social responsibility.
Immediate Steps to Address the Political Crisis
To address Bangladesh’s political crisis, the following measures should be considered:
1. National Political Dialogue
A meaningful national dialogue should bring together democratic political parties, civil society, professionals and representatives of citizens.
2. A Fair Political Code of Conduct
All political forces should agree to reject revenge, misinformation, violence, political harassment and the misuse of state institutions for partisan interests.
3. Independent and Efficient Justice
Impartial investigations and timely trials must be ensured regardless of political identity.
4. A Strong Citizen Security Mechanism
An independent mechanism should investigate allegations of unlawful killings, torture, enforced disappearance, oppression and political violence.
5. Effective Anti-Corruption Measures
Anti-corruption efforts must be transparent, evidence-based and free from political influence.
6. Neutral State Institutions
The administration, law-enforcement agencies, judiciary and electoral institutions must be protected from partisan control.
7. National Consensus on Development and Security
Long-term national policies should be developed on the economy, education, healthcare, food security, border security and national defence. Such policies should not change every time the government changes.
Bangladesh’s Future Is a Shared Responsibility
Bangladesh’s future does not belong to any single party, group or individual. It is the shared responsibility of the entire nation.
Political differences will remain, but national unity is essential when the security and future of the country are at stake.
Governments may change through democratic processes. However, justice, honesty, humanity and the rights of citizens must never change with political power.
The justice-based social order established in Madinah and the spirit of forgiveness and reconciliation demonstrated after the Conquest of Makkah offer an important moral lesson: a strong state is not simply one with a powerful government. A strong state is one where the weak can obtain justice, citizens can live safely and public power is exercised as a trust.
What Bangladesh needs today is:
A society free from extremism.
Politics free from destructive division.
An administration free from corruption.
A state free from political revenge.
Justice for all.
Safety as the first priority.
Justice for All. Safety First.
If justice and security are ensured, public trust can be restored, social peace can be strengthened and Bangladesh can move towards becoming a safer, more developed, humane and justice-based country.
May Allah protect Bangladesh and its people and guide our beloved country towards peace, justice, unity and prosperity.Ameen.
