The Jatiya Sangsad on Thursday unanimously adopted a motion mourning the deaths of former Acting President, Speaker, minister and parliament member Barrister Muhammad Jamiruddin Sircar and 14 other former lawmakers, as well as expressing sorrow over the loss of lives in the recent floods and landslides in Nepal.
Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, Bir Bikram, moved the motion on the first working day of the third session of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad.
The House expressed deep sorrow over the deaths caused by the sudden floods and landslides in Nepal, prayed for the salvation of those who died and conveyed sincere sympathy to their bereaved families.
The condolence motion also covered the deaths of Md Rustam Ali Molla, former BNP parliament member; Farid Uddin Chowdhury, former Jamaat-e-Islami parliament member; Advocate Harun Al Rashid, former Chief Whip, state minister and BNP parliament member; Mosharraf Hossain Mia, former JSD parliament member; Selima Ahmad, former Awami League parliament member; Sharfuddin Khasru, former Jatiya Party and BNP parliament member; Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, state minister and former Awami League parliament member; Golam Sarwar Hiru, former Islami Oikya Jote parliament member; Bir Muktijoddha Satish Chandra Roy, former Awami League minister and parliament member; Muhammad Rafiqul Islam, former Awami League parliament member; Major General (retd) Mahabbat Jan Chowdhury, former parliament member and minister; Abu Sadat Mohammad Abu Saeed, former Jamaat parliament member; Maulana Abdul Aziz of Jamaat; and former BNP state minister Fazlur Rahman.
The House also expressed profound grief over the deaths of Ekushey Padak-winning poet Al Mujahidi, Ekushey Padak-winning artist Mustafa Monwar, noted political thinker, writer and researcher Professor Abul Kashem Fazlul Haque, and eminent academic Dr Mokbul Hossain.
It also expressed deep sorrow over deaths in accidents in different parts of Bangladesh and abroad, prayed for the departed souls and conveyed sympathy to their bereaved families. The condolence motion was later adopted unanimously.
As a mark of respect to the deceased, members of parliament stood in silence for one minute. Religious Affairs Minister Kazi Shah Mofazzal Houssain (Kaikobad) then led a munajat seeking peace for the departed souls.
