DHAKA: Speaker of the Bangladesh Parliament Hafiz Uddin Ahmad has said that the Inter-Parliamentary Union’s (IPU) misconceptions about Bangladesh have been cleared.
He made the remarks upon returning home on Sunday (October 11) after attending the 153rd IPU Assembly in Arusha, Tanzania.
On October 5, the speaker formally assumed office as chair of the IPU’s Asia-Pacific Geopolitical Group (APG), taking over the responsibility from Bhutanese Speaker Temba Dorji.
On the same day, Barrister Zahrat Adib Chowdhury, MP, chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was elected to the IPU Executive Committee representing the Asia-Pacific Group at the 153rd IPU Assembly.
The appointments mark a significant achievement for Bangladesh in international parliamentary diplomacy.
The speaker was accompanied by parliamentary Whip Mia Nuruddin Ahmed Apu and lawmakers Sarwar Jamal Nizam, A. E. Sultan Mahmud Babu, Md Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas, S. K. Azizul Bari, Humam Qader Chowdhury, Mir Ahmad Bin Quasem, Sansila Jebrin and Rokeya Begum.
Upon the arrival of the parliamentary delegation, led by the speaker, officials from the Parliament Secretariat and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs warmly welcomed them at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.
The Asia-Pacific Group comprises 37 member countries. Bangladesh’s assumption of the chairmanship is expected to strengthen the country’s representation in the international parliamentary arena.
