Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has assured the family of BUET student Abrar Fahad that steps will be taken to ensure the speedy implementation of the verdict in his murder case.
The assurance came as Abrar’s family sought swift completion of the legal process and execution of the sentences against those convicted of killing him.
Abrar Fahad, a second-year student of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), was beaten to death at Sher-e-Bangla Hall on October 6, 2019.
His killing sparked widespread outrage and protests across Bangladesh.
A Dhaka speedy trial tribunal on December 8, 2021, sentenced 20 people to death and five others to life imprisonment for the murder.
The High Court later upheld all the sentences in March 2025. The case is now awaiting final hearing before the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court.
The state has said it will not seek any adjournment once the case comes up for hearing at the Appellate Division, aiming to ensure a speedy conclusion of the proceedings.
