Former interim government chief adviser and Nobel laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus is receiving special security and protocol in the United States following instructions from Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
Ghulam Mortuza, press minister at the Bangladesh Embassy in Washington, DC, confirmed the development to Manabzamin.
The move follows an incident at New York’s John F Kennedy International Airport on Monday, when a group of people allegedly harassed Yunus as he was leaving the airport in a wheelchair.
Videos of the incident went viral on social media, drawing widespread condemnation.
Following the incident, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman instructed Bangladesh’s diplomatic missions in Washington and New York, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to strengthen security arrangements for Yunus during his stay in the United States.
The Bangladesh government strongly condemned the incident and called for legal action against those responsible.
The Bangladesh Embassy in Washington has informed the US State Department, while the Bangladesh Consulate in New York has contacted the New York City Police Department and relevant Port Authority officials.
Written complaints have also been submitted, and the authorities are awaiting further updates.
The government has stressed the need to prevent similar incidents involving respected Bangladeshi figures abroad.
