Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Thursday inspected the overall operations of Mongla Port, the country’s second-largest seaport, and directed officials to take steps to enhance its capacity.
The prime minister visited the port’s jetty area at around 3pm on October 22, touring various infrastructure facilities, including the port expansion project, jetty facilities and container yards.
During the visit, he gave instructions to the officials concerned to strengthen the port’s capacity for international trade, ensure faster cargo handling and expedite modernisation efforts.
Tarique Rahman arrived in Mongla on Thursday morning as part of an official visit aimed at boosting the economic potential of the country’s southern coastal region and reviewing the port’s operational capacity. He reached the area at around 10am.
Before arriving in Mongla, the prime minister toured parts of Khulna and the coastal areas near the Sundarbans by helicopter and watercraft. He later arrived at the Bangladesh Navy’s Mongla base before proceeding directly to the port’s jetty area.
BNP leaders and activists gathered at the port’s main entrance to welcome him as he arrived.
Senior officials of the Mongla Port Authority and representatives of the Ministry of Shipping accompanied the prime minister during the inspection.
After visiting the port, Tarique Rahman was scheduled to review other development projects, including a proposed economic zone put forward by the Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA).
He was expected to return to Dhaka after completing his scheduled engagements.
