KHULNA: Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today inaugurated the second season of “Notun Kuri Sports”, a talent hunt programme aimed at promoting the physical and mental development of children and adolescents and nurturing talented athletes at the grassroots level.
He inaugurated the programme under the theme “Sports as a profession, assurance for the family” by releasing balloons and pigeons at Khulna District Stadium at 3:45pm.
The Prime Minister also hoisted the national flag and met young athletes competing in 10 sporting disciplines.
Students and athletes in the galleries waved at him as he arrived at the stadium, and he waved back. The children and adolescents were visibly excited to see him up close.
State Minister for Youth and Sports Aminul Haque was present at the ceremony.
The programme aims to identify sporting talent among children and adolescents across the country. The government plans to select promising athletes at the grassroots level and create opportunities for their further development.
The Department of Sports is implementing the programme under the Ministry of Youth and Sports in line with a pledge in the BNP’s election manifesto.
The initiative seeks to discover sporting talent, drawing inspiration from the popular “Notun Kuri” talent hunt programme launched in the 1980s.
