The Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police has arrested former Textiles and Jute Minister Abdul Latif Siddique in connection with a case involving murder and crimes against humanity linked to the 2013 Hefazat-e-Islam rally at Shapla Square in Motijheel.
The arrest was confirmed on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, by Additional Commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Detective Branch, Shafiqul Islam.
He stated that DB officers apprehended Latif Siddique from a residence in the capital’s Gulshan area following an arrest warrant previously issued against him by the International Crimes Tribunal.
The arrest came shortly after Latif Siddique appeared at the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court earlier in the day for a hearing regarding a separate case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act at Shahbagh Police Station.
Speaking to reporters outside the courtroom prior to his detention, the former minister indicated his intention to surrender before the International Crimes Tribunal by the following Sunday or Monday if police did not arrest him first.
However, law enforcement officials moved swiftly to take him into custody before he could do so.
