If the government chooses the path of terrorism, people will take the path of resistance, said National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener and Chief Whip of the Opposition in Parliament Nahid Islam.
He made the remarks while speaking to journalists on Thursday (July 30) over the alleged attack on an NCP motorcade in Golapganj, Sylhet.
He spoke after attending a discussion titled “Fiery July: Debt of Blood and Future Bangladesh” organised by the university unit of Jatiya Chhatra Shakti at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST).
Nahid said, “We are calling on not only the 11-party alliance but also students, the general public, and all democratic political and social forces to unite against terrorism. What we have seen from Habiganj yesterday to Golapganj today is an attempt to turn the country into a haven for terrorists, exposing the government’s alleged terrorist character before the nation.”
“If the government walks the path of terrorism, the people will walk the path of resistance,” he added.
“We will go to Golapganj now and stand there. Let’s see how many terrorists this government has and how much they can resist us. But our programmes in favour of a referendum mandate, reforms, justice and people’s rights will continue,” Nahid said.
Earlier on Thursday afternoon, an NCP motorcade came under attack in Golapganj, Sylhet. The incident took place on the road in front of the Golapganj Municipality gate at Chowmuhani. The rear glass of a vehicle carrying NCP Northern Region Chief Organiser Sarjis Alam was damaged. Sarjis blamed Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) activists for the attack.
However, Sylhet Superintendent of Police Dr Chowdhury Md Jaber Sadeq gave a different account.
“A vehicle was passing along the road when someone threw a brick from the side, breaking the glass of Sarjis Alam’s vehicle. I would not describe it as an attack on the motorcade. I have no information that anyone was injured,” he said.
Earlier on Tuesday (July 28), an NCP motorcade was attacked after the party’s July March programme in Habiganj. Several NCP leaders and activists were injured and multiple vehicles were damaged in the incident.
