At least seven people were injured after activists of the Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) and Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir clashed in Narayanganj on Wednesday over speeches delivered at a programme marking the July Mass Uprising Day.

The violence broke out at Government Tolaram College and later spread to the Chashara and College Road areas, where the two groups engaged in repeated chases and counter-chases, using brickbats and sticks.

Police intervened and brought the situation under control by deploying additional personnel.

Both organisations blamed each other for provoking the violence. Chhatra Dal alleged that Chhatra Shibir made inflammatory remarks and later attacked its activists with outsiders, while Chhatra Shibir claimed its members were assaulted by Chhatra Dal after the programme.

Narayanganj Additional Superintendent of Police (DB) Md Hasanuzzaman said the clash stemmed from an altercation over a speech at the event.

He said police restored order and that no arrests had been made immediately, adding that CCTV footage would be reviewed before taking legal action against those responsible.
