National Citizen Party (NCP) Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary on Wednesday warned that Bangladesh’s sovereignty must not be compromised for political power, saying the country’s people would resist any attempt to “sell” the nation to foreign powers.
Speaking at a rally organised by the 11-party alliance at the south gate of the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque to mark the second anniversary of the July Uprising, Patwary said Bangladesh could not be traded away “like the Taj Mahal” ahead of the next election.
He alleged that BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman had promised to mortgage the country to India and other “deep states” before the election. However, he said, Bangladesh did not belong to any individual but to its 180 million people.
Patwary further claimed that Tarique Rahman’s political downfall had already begun and said the people would judge him just as they had judged former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
Recalling the July Uprising, he said farmers, workers, students and ordinary citizens had shed blood on the streets, while Tarique Rahman had not been present during the movement.
“The prime minister’s office is not anyone’s personal property,” he said, warning that if the people’s mandate was ignored, Tarique Rahman could face the same fate as past authoritarian rulers.
Patwary also condemned recent incidents involving attacks on educational institutions with machetes and alleged obstruction of medical treatment at hospitals.
He called on citizens to remain vigilant in protecting Islam and Bangladesh’s sovereignty, while urging Islamic scholars to remain united in support of reforms and justice.
The rally was chaired by Mamunul Haque, Ameer of Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish, and was addressed by other senior leaders of the 11-party alliance.
