Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon on Wednesday called for building an equitable, accountable and humane Bangladesh by upholding the ideals of the July Mass Uprising, urging people to remain united in safeguarding democracy and preventing the return of authoritarianism.
Speaking at a discussion and reception for the families of the July martyrs at the District Shilpakala Academy auditorium in Barishal, the minister said the sacrifices made during the historic movement must continue to inspire the nation.
The programme was organised to mark July Mass Uprising Day 2026.
“The ideals and spirit of the July Mass Uprising must remain alive in the hearts of every citizen,” Swapon said, adding that the aspirations of thousands of people who participated in the movement should never be undermined by any force.
He urged people from all walks of life to remain united and vigilant in protecting democracy and preserving the achievements of the uprising.
The minister alleged that democracy and the people’s rights had been monopolised for years by a single family and a particular group, weakening democratic institutions and depriving citizens of their voting rights.
Calling for national unity, Swapon said people should rise above political affiliations, religious identities and ethnic differences to protect democratic values and strengthen the country’s institutions.
He also alleged that attempts had been made in the past to divide people through intimidation, inducements and promises of power. However, he said, conscious citizens rejected those efforts and chose to place the country’s interests above personal or political gains.
Describing the July Mass Uprising as a nationwide movement, Swapon said it was not driven by a handful of individuals but reflected the collective resistance of ordinary people against prolonged injustice, deprivation and oppression.
“The strength of this movement lay in the unity, courage and unwavering faith of the people in democracy,” he said.
Barishal Divisional Commissioner Khalil Ahmed chaired the programme, which was attended by government officials, political leaders, journalists, civil society representatives and family members of those who were killed during the July Mass Uprising.
A documentary highlighting the lives and sacrifices of the July martyrs was also screened during the event as part of the commemoration.
