The Dhaka University (DU) authorities have announced legal and administrative action against several teachers accused of engaging in alleged anti-state activities, according to an official statement issued on Wednesday.
The university said it had taken note of recent media reports alleging that 404 teachers from 22 universities were involved in efforts to reactivate a banned political party and facilitate the return of fugitive convict Sheikh Hasina to Bangladesh.
DU authorities described such activities as contrary to the country’s laws, judicial process and constitutional order.
In the statement signed by Deputy Director of the Public Relations Office Faruk Mahmud, the university said it is closely monitoring the matter and warned that any teacher found involved in activities aimed at destabilising the state or undermining constitutional institutions under the guise of freedom of expression would face appropriate legal and administrative measures.
The university reiterated its commitment to academic freedom, the rule of law, democratic values and respect for the Constitution, while stressing that activities deemed anti-state or unlawful are unacceptable and inconsistent with the responsibilities and ethical standards expected of university teachers.
