Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman has questioned why the government is taking so long to bring former prime minister Sheikh Hasina back to Bangladesh from India.
He raised the question while speaking to local journalists at a views exchange meeting at the Bagerhat Circuit House on Friday.
Responding to a journalist’s question about Hasina, Shafiqur Rahman said an extradition or prisoner-exchange arrangement exists and asked why the government was not taking the initiative to bring her back.
He said Hasina should face the judicial process in Bangladesh over the verdict against her, while stressing that the trial must be fair and based on justice.
On the country’s law and order situation, the Jamaat chief said the ruling party bears responsibility for maintaining peace and must take steps to prevent violence.
He also criticised the state of press freedom, describing the media as the “fourth pillar” of the state and urging journalists to report independently.
Regarding the possibility of the Awami League returning to politics, Shafiqur Rahman said he did not think the party was currently in a position to return, accusing it of creating a “rule of terror” and saying many people had been killed or disappeared during its rule.
