Former Pakistan prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan finally got the opportunity to meet his sister and wife Bushra Bibi after nine months. The meetings took place at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi.
The meetings were allowed following a court directive amid concerns among his family members over his physical condition.
According to Samaa TV, Imran’s sister Noreen Niazi met him in the conference room of Adiala Jail following the Supreme Court’s directions. It was the first time this year that Noreen had been allowed to meet her brother. The meeting lasted around 15 minutes.
Dawn reported that Imran’s health condition and recent medical treatment were discussed during the meeting. Noreen also informed him about the Supreme Court’s important directives.
Under the directives, Imran is to be shifted to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad for medical examinations.
Noreen, however, made no political comments after the meeting. The court had warned that the facility could be withdrawn if jail meetings were used for political purposes.
Imran’s other two sisters, Aleema Khan and Uzma Khan, and his cousin Qasim Zaman were not allowed to meet him on security grounds. No PTI political leaders were also permitted to enter the jail.
Imran also met his wife, Bushra Bibi, separately. The Express Tribune reported that their meeting in the same conference room lasted around 35 minutes. The two had previously met for 45 minutes in June, according to Pakistani media reports.
Bushra Bibi, who is also incarcerated at the same jail, later met her children from her previous marriage, Musa, Mubashshara Maneka and Mehrunnisa. She spent around 40 minutes with them.
The 72-year-old Imran Khan has been detained at Adiala Jail since August 2023. The former prime minister, who has been convicted in several cases, is currently serving a 14-year sentence in the Al-Qadir Trust corruption case.
His family and lawyers have long faced difficulties in securing meetings with him. In June, his sisters and PTI leaders made several attempts to visit Adiala Jail but were denied access. Dawn reported that the Islamabad High Court had allowed Imran’s family members, lawyers and associates to meet him twice a week.
Concerns have also recently grown over Imran’s health. Several petitions have been filed in Pakistani courts seeking to ensure his medical treatment and access for family members and lawyers.
According to Dawn, Imran’s sister Uzma Khan had sought his transfer to Shifa International Hospital and permission for him to receive treatment from private doctors.
The latest court directives regarding Imran’s medical treatment and detention have sparked renewed discussion in Pakistan’s political arena. His meetings with family members after a prolonged gap have also brought relief to his family.
