The funeral prayer for Barrister Toufiq Newaz, senior lawyer of the Supreme Court and husband of former minister and Awami League (currently banned from political activities) central leader Dr Dipu Moni, was held in Dhaka on Thursday.
The janaza was held after Zuhr prayers at Gulshan Central Azad Mosque. He will later be buried at Banani Cemetery.
Earlier, around 12:15pm, Toufiq Newaz’s body was taken from his residence in Kalabagan, Dhanmondi, to the mosque. In the morning, when his body was brought to the family residence in Kalabagan, Dipu Moni saw her husband for the last time. She bid him farewell in tears as his body lay in a refrigerated vehicle.
On Wednesday afternoon, Dipu Moni’s lawyer Gazi Faisal Islam applied for her release on four days’ parole. Later, Munshiganj District Magistrate and Deputy Commissioner Syeda Nurmahal Ashrafi approved her parole for 12 hours, from 6am to 6pm on Thursday.
Dipu Moni had been detained at Munshiganj District Jail after being accused in several cases over killings during the 2024 mass uprising. Her husband, Toufiq Newaz, had been suffering from various kidney and liver complications for a long time. She had applied several times for permission to meet him outside prison but was not granted permission.
It may be noted that when Dipu Moni was produced before the court, her husband, who was bedridden, would sometimes go to meet her on a stretcher.
