Islami Andolan Bangladesh has remained absent from voting in the presidential election, accusing relevant parties of deviating from the political consensus established under the July Charter.
The party’s decision was announced in an official statement signed by Islami Andolan Bangladesh Secretary General Maulana Gazi Ataur Rahman.
While acknowledging that the office of the President is largely ceremonial, the statement noted that the presidency remains vital during political crises and general elections as a unifying constitutional role. Partisan appointments to the presidency, the party argued, have historically triggered national election disputes.
According to the party, the National Consensus Commission previously agreed upon specific guidelines to reform the presidential election process, which drew no note of dissent from major parties like the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). Islami Andolan expected those agreed-upon guidelines in the July Charter to govern the election of the nation’s 23rd president.
The party pointed out that two key provisions under the July Charter are being overlooked in the upcoming election: Section 10: Requires the president to be elected via a secret ballot conducted across both houses of the legislature and Section 28: Permits members of parliament to vote independently on parliamentary matters, excluding money bills and votes of confidence.
The press release stated that because these two consensus points are not being upheld in the current presidential election framework, Islami Andolan chose to withhold its participation.
