Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan, a member of the BNP Standing Committee and a renowned academic, has joined the cabinet led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. He took oath as a minister at the historic Durbar Hall of Bangabhaban on Friday. His portfolio was allocated later that night.
Dr. Moyeen Khan is known as one of the key policymakers of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). He is currently a member of the party’s Standing Committee. In the 13th parliamentary election, he was elected for the fifth time as a member of parliament from the Narsingdi-2 (Palash) constituency on the BNP’s ‘paddy sheaf’ symbol.
Dr. Moyeen is the son of Abdul Momen Khan, a former BNP politician and food minister. He began his political career under his father’s guidance. He became a member of the BNP Standing Committee in December 2009.
In the past, Moyeen Khan served in several important ministries during BNP governments. He previously served as minister for the Ministry of Information and the Ministry of Science and Technology, which was later renamed the Ministry of Science and Information and Communication Technology. In the current government, he has been given charge of the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives.
According to the Cabinet Division’s list, Dr. Moyeen Khan is the ”first minister in the cabinet”, holding serial number 1 under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. The ministry was previously headed by Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. The position became vacant after Mirza Fakhrul resigned from the cabinet before becoming president.
Moyeen Khan is particularly respected for his civil and intellectual discourse in politics. He has also authored several notable research papers and scientific articles in the fields of electrical and electronic engineering and technology, which have been published in international journals.
