BNP Standing Committee Member, Prime Minister’s Political Adviser and Dhaka-8 MP Mirza Abbas became emotional as he attended a session of the Jatiya Sangsad for the first time after receiving medical treatment abroad for several months.
The emotional moment came on Thursday when Abbas, who attended the session in a wheelchair, delivered his first speech in Parliament at around 5:45pm.
It was his first address to Parliament since taking the oath as a lawmaker. The House fell silent as he spoke.
“I have returned to Parliament to work. I want to work for the people. I have been undergoing treatment for the past five months. I was receiving treatment abroad and I am still undergoing treatment. But because of the affection and love of the people, I had to come to Parliament,” Abbas said.
Reflecting on his return to Parliament after a long gap since 2006, Abbas described the occasion as one of the most emotional moments of his political career.
“I am deeply moved to be able to stand in this sacred place, the Jatiya Sangsad, after such a long time and speak for the ordinary people,” he said.
He expressed his sincere gratitude to the President, the Prime Minister and the Speaker of Parliament for keeping in touch with him and showing compassion during his illness.
During his speech, Abbas used the microphone of his party colleague and Dhaka-2 MP Mohammad Amanullah Aman. He also received assistance from Aman in reading his written statement.
The emotional scene moved other lawmakers present in the chamber as well.
