Four people were injured after miscreants allegedly hurled a crude bomb during a National Citizen Party (NCP) rally in Savar on Monday night following the party’s “July March” programme marking the second anniversary of the July Movement.
The explosion occurred at around 9:45 pm at the Eidgah Ground near Savar Bus Stand.
The injured were identified as party activists Md Shahin Khandaker (30), Md Jasim (26), and Md Shahadat Hossain (40), all residents of different areas of Savar.
The identity of the fourth injured person could not be immediately confirmed. They were taken to Enam Medical College Hospital for treatment.
NCP Joint Chief Coordinator Arifur Rahman Tuhin told Bangla Tribune that four party activists were injured in the blast.
Three of them were admitted to Enam Medical College Hospital, while the identity and details of the fourth victim were not immediately known.
Dr Hasan, Resident Medical Officer (RMO) at Enam Medical College Hospital, said four injured people were brought to the hospital.
One sustained a serious leg injury and received primary treatment, while the other three were treated in the emergency department before being referred for surgery.
“The patients told us they were injured in a bomb explosion. We will know more after X-rays and other examinations,” he said.
Following the incident, NCP leaders and activists, led by the party’s Convener and Opposition Chief Whip Nahid Islam, held a protest march.
NCP central member Yasir Arafat said the explosion occurred while Dhaka District NCP Convener Engineer Nabila Tasnid was addressing the rally.
According to him, NCP Convener Nahid Islam, Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain MP, Chief Organiser Sarjis Alam, and other central leaders were on the stage when the explosion occurred, but none of them was injured.
The “July March” is part of the NCP’s month-long programme marking the second anniversary of the July Movement.
Monday’s march began in the afternoon from the Sramik College area in Kaliganj, Gazipur. After addressing the gathering there, Nahid Islam travelled to Savar for the rally.
Among those attending the programme as special guests were National Youth Power President Tarikul Islam and Organising Secretary Rifat Rashid. NCP Joint Chief Organiser Ali Naser Khan and other party leaders were also present.
