Gulshan Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Daud Hossain has been withdrawn from his post following a flash procession by the Awami League, whose political activities are currently banned, in the capital’s Gulshan area.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) issued an order on Wednesday, saying Daud Hossain had been withdrawn for “administrative reasons” and attached to the Central Reserve Office under the DMP headquarters and administration department.
The development came five days after hundreds of Awami League activists took part in a procession in the Gulshan-1 area on Friday.
Police moved to disperse the procession, prompting protesters to detonate two cocktails. Police then fired two rounds of rubber bullets to bring the situation under control.
Several videos of the procession circulated on social media, showing hundreds of people chanting “Joy Bangla”.
Police said they had detained two people from the scene with five live cocktails during the procession. A case was filed at Gulshan Police Station the same day under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
The case names 118 people as accused and includes another 80 to 100 unidentified people.
Police said 83 people had been arrested in the case as of Monday, while 24 of them had been placed on remand.
Questions have since been raised over whether law enforcement agencies had prior information about the planned gathering in the strategically important Gulshan area and, if so, whether any preventive measures had been taken.
Daud Hossain was withdrawn from his post five days after the procession, with the DMP citing administrative reasons.
