The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has removed M Tanvir Ahmed, deputy commissioner (DC) of its Gulshan Division, from his post, days after a flash procession by the banned Awami League and its affiliated organisations in the capital’s Gulshan area.
An office order issued on Wednesday said Tanvir Ahmed had been attached to the DMP headquarters for administrative reasons.
He was instructed to hand over charge to the next senior officer and report to headquarters.
Earlier the same day, Gulshan Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Daud Hossain was also withdrawn and attached to the DMP headquarters and administration department.
The moves came five days after a procession involving banned Awami League and its affiliated organisations took place near KFC on Road No. 3 in Gulshan on September 11.
Police moved to disperse the procession, during which protesters allegedly threw cocktail bombs at police.
Two people were arrested at the scene and five cocktails were recovered.
Police have since arrested at least 75 people in connection with the incident, according to reports.
DMP officials said the DC and OC were withdrawn for administrative reasons, while no replacements had yet been announced.
