Two sisters of jailed former Pakistani prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan — Dr Uzma Khan and Noreen Niazi — were detained for 30 days on Monday, a day after their sister Aleema Khan was also detained.
The detentions came ahead of the PTI’s planned nationwide protest and march towards Islamabad on September 27, which the party has called for Imran Khan’s release and the supremacy of the Constitution.
According to an order issued by the Lahore deputy commissioner’s office, Uzma and Noreen were detained under Section 3 of the Punjab Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance, 1960. The order said they were considered a threat to public safety and the maintenance of public order.
The authorities alleged that the two women had been involved in protests on May 9, 2023, and had encouraged PTI workers to damage public and government property. The order also accused them of attempting to mobilise workers through social media and public gatherings.
They were transferred to Kot Lakhpat Central Jail in Lahore, where Aleema is also being held.
PTI Central Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram alleged that Uzma and Noreen, along with family members, were taken away in an armoured vehicle. PTI lawyer Owais Younis Chaudhry also claimed that all three of Imran Khan’s sisters had been detained.
PTI condemned the arrests, calling them an abuse of power and a violation of fundamental rights. Party chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan said such arrests could further heighten political tensions and urged an end to confrontation.
Imran Khan’s son Kasim Khan also alleged that his aunts had been “abducted”, claiming authorities entered their home and took them away without explanation. These allegations could not be independently verified.
The detention of Aleema Khan was ordered by the Lahore deputy commissioner on Sunday under the same law, with police confirming that she had been taken to Kot Lakhpat jail.
