BNP and Awami League supporters held rival rallies outside the hotel where Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is staying in New York, prompting police to deploy additional security personnel in the area.
Tarique arrived in New York on Monday to attend the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
He is staying at the Hyatt Grand Central New York.
BNP leaders and activists gathered outside the hotel carrying national flags, banners and posters and chanted slogans welcoming the prime minister.
On the opposite side of the road, Awami League leaders and supporters staged a protest against his visit.
Police were deployed between the two groups to prevent any confrontation, according to reports.
Tarique is scheduled to address the UN General Assembly on Thursday, September 24, in his first speech to the world body as Bangladesh’s prime minister.
