Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister and BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday announced that opposition members of parliament (MPs) will receive around Tk 20 crore each for development projects in their respective constituencies.
Delivering a statement under Rule 300 of the Rules of Procedure in the Jatiya Sangsad, Mirza Fakhrul said the allocation would come from the Prime Minister’s discretionary fund and would apply to constituencies represented by opposition MPs, excluding those within city corporation areas.
“The Prime Minister has granted around Tk 20 crore from his discretionary fund for the constituencies represented by opposition MPs, excluding city corporation areas,” he told the House.
He said the funds would be used primarily for the development and renovation of mosques, graveyards and Eidgahs to improve community infrastructure and public services at the local level.
The announcement came during a parliamentary sitting presided over by Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, Bir Bikram.
Reacting to the announcement, the Speaker said the decision was unprecedented in his long parliamentary career.
“I spent 40 years in this parliament. I also served as a member of the opposition, but never received even a single penny. I was arrested five times and sent to jail. That is all I received, nothing else,” he remarked.
The allocation is expected to support local development initiatives in opposition-held constituencies and is being viewed as a significant step toward ensuring more equitable distribution of development funds regardless of party affiliation.
