LAKSHMIPUR: Water Resources Minister and BNP Joint Secretary General Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee has accused the opposition of being involved in a new conspiracy to undermine democracy, alleging that its activities resemble those of the “fascists” who fled the country on August 5.
He made the remarks on Friday (September 25) while speaking as the chief guest at a discussion meeting in Bhabaniganj Union of Lakshmipur Sadar upazila. He was attending the inauguration of bank protection work along a WAPDA canal.
Anee said the opposition’s use of abusive language could not be considered the “beauty of democracy,” adding that the people of the country had not accepted such politics and would not accept it in the future.
He alleged that the opposition was engaged in a new conspiracy to destroy democracy and claimed that they had said bomb and cocktail attacks would not stop unless the demands of an 11-party alliance were accepted.
He further alleged that those who fled on August 5 were continuing their activities from abroad, including setting vehicles on fire, carrying out cocktail attacks and organising flash processions. He claimed there were similarities between such activities and the words and actions of the current opposition.
Referring to what he described as a “deep conspiracy” against the country, democracy and the government led by Tarique Rahman, Anee said BNP had come to power through political movements and had confronted conspirators on the streets.
“We will confront this evil force on the streets in the days ahead,” he said.
Lakshmipur Water Development Board Executive Engineer Nahid Uz Zaman Khan, BNP district Joint Convener Hasibur Rahman, Bangladesh Football Federation Vice-President Wahid Uddin Chowdhury Happy and BNP Sadar (East) upazila President Main Uddin Chowdhury Riaz, among others, were present at the event.
