KURIGRAM: Islami Chhatra Shibir Secretary General Sibgatullah Sibga has challenged the government, saying his organisation would win any student union election held freely anywhere in Bangladesh.
He made the remarks while speaking as the chief discussant at a reception and career guidance programme for first-year honours students for the 2025-26 academic year, organised by the Kurigram Government College unit of Chhatra Shibir at the municipal town hall on Sunday afternoon.
Sibgatullah criticised what he described as the prevailing pattern of politics and student politics in Bangladesh, saying politics had increasingly come to be associated with rallies, processions and clashes.
He said Chhatra Shibir had sought to develop what he described as a constructive alternative to this trend.
“Islami Chhatra Shibir is not merely a conventional student organisation; it is like a complete university,” he said, claiming that the organisation has its own curriculum, online library and various academic programmes to help students develop as capable citizens.
He said the organisation’s academic and student-oriented programmes had helped it gain support among ordinary students.
Sibgatullah also pointed to the recent student union elections, saying Shibir-backed panels had won in five consecutive elections. Reports have documented Shibir-backed victories or major gains in student union elections at several major public universities, including Dhaka University, Jahangirnagar University, Chittagong University, Rajshahi University and Jagannath University.
He said the organisation’s proposals and student-focused programmes had helped it win students’ support.
“If free student union elections are held anywhere, Shibir will prove its popularity by winning,” he said.
Jamaat-e-Islami central Majlis-e-Shura member and Kurigram-3 MP Barrister Mahbubul Alam Salehi attended the programme as chief guest.
Kurigram district Shibir president Mosharraf Hossain and former central debate secretary of the organisation Ashiqur Rahman also spoke as special guests.
The programme was chaired by Mahmudul Hasan Rifat, president of the Kurigram Government College unit of Chhatra Shibir.
