Dhaka University (DU) has temporarily suspended Professor Zeenat Huda of the Department of Sociology over allegations that she took a position against students during the July uprising.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the university’s Syndicate, the highest policy-making body of DU, on Wednesday.
The suspension followed recommendations made by an investigation committee formed in response to complaints from students.
DU Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Prof Mohammed Almujaddade Alfasane confirmed the development, saying the university authorities had accepted the probe committee’s recommendations and decided to place Prof Huda under temporary suspension.
The Syndicate also decided to form a tribunal to further investigate the allegations. University authorities said additional measures would be taken based on the tribunal’s findings.
Prof Huda is the general secretary of the Dhaka University Teachers’ Association and a professor in the Sociology Department.
She previously served as provost of Rokeya Hall, chairperson of the Sociology Department, and an elected member of the university Senate.
She is also associated with the pro-Awami League Blue Panel of teachers.
According to reports, Prof Huda has rejected the allegations, describing the action against her as politically motivated.
