Entry and exit at 11 Delhi Metro stations were closed on Friday as the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and several student organisations called for protests demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The affected stations include Rajiv Chowk, Central Secretariat, Janpath, Patel Chowk, Seva Teerth, Mandi House, Lok Kalyan Marg, INA, Chawri Bazar, Ramakrishna Ashram Marg and New Delhi.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation said the restrictions would remain in place until further notice. Interchange facilities remained available at Rajiv Chowk, Mandi House, New Delhi and Central Secretariat.

The protests were called by the AAP, All India Students’ Association (AISA), National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) and Indian Youth Congress, among others.

The groups have accused the Election Commission of removing a large number of voters from electoral rolls during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process and have demanded accountability from the poll body. They are also calling for Kumar’s resignation.

Delhi Police denied permission for the proposed demonstration and imposed restrictions around Jantar Mantar, where protesters planned to gather. Security was tightened across central Delhi ahead of the protest.

AAP Delhi chief Saurabh Bharadwaj and several other protesters were detained after reaching the protest site, according to reports.
