Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami leader Major (retd) Akhtaruzzaman has been handed over to Airport Police Station after being arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of police.

Airport Police Station Officer-in-Charge Kamrul Hasan Talukder confirmed the development on Friday night.

Akhtaruzzaman was arrested from his residence in the Cantonment area at around 6:10pm, shortly after a case was filed against him over an incident at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

The case was filed by airport security officer Md Shahriar Alam Sajib, alleging that Akhtaruzzaman obstructed government officials, created disorder and assaulted an on-duty security supervisor during a dispute over luggage delays and a shortage of trolleys.

According to the case statement, the incident occurred after passengers arriving from Madinah faced delays in collecting their baggage.

Akhtaruzzaman is accused of verbally abusing the airport executive director, threatening him and later physically assaulting a security supervisor who asked his accompanying personnel not to record videos inside a restricted area.

The case was filed under Sections 186, 189, 294, 323, 352, 353, 504 and 506 of the Penal Code.

A Dhaka court has directed Airport Police Station to submit the investigation report by November 10.
