Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s own conduct shows that he is on the verge of collapse, Congress general secretary K C Venugopal has said.
Venugopal launched the sharp attack on Modi at a press conference organised by the opposition INDIA bloc.
His remarks came amid growing political tensions across India over the protection of voting rights and the role of the Election Commission.
As protests gather momentum over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and demands for the resignation of Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, the opposition has accused the government of attempting to silence dissenting voices.
Venugopal alleged that Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah were desperately trying to shield the Chief Election Commissioner. However, he said, their efforts would not save the government and would instead pave the way for its downfall.
He further claimed that the Modi government was afraid of peaceful opposition protests. He alleged that this fear had prompted repressive measures, including the closure of metro stations, heavy police deployment and detentions in Delhi, Mumbai and other parts of the country.
The INDIA bloc has called a major protest rally in Delhi next Monday to demand greater transparency in the electoral process and protection of people’s voting rights.
Opposition leaders have already met the President of India to express their concerns.
Senior leaders of the alliance are also scheduled to meet the Chief Justice of India (CJI) on Monday to press their demands.
Venugopal said opposition parties would continue their movement at all levels until democratic values were upheld and electoral reforms were implemented. Source: Rediff.
