Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Shafiqur Rahman has blamed ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina for the harassment of former interim government chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus by Bangladeshi expatriates at John F Kennedy International Airport in New York.

The incident reportedly took place on Monday (October 12), after Yunus arrived at the airport from Doha on a Qatar Airways flight.

Condemning the incident in a Facebook post on Tuesday afternoon (October 13), Shafiqur alleged that the activities of the banned Awami League were behind the incident.

“The defeated and fugitive fascist is continuing to incite her terrorists to engage in terrorist activities even in the distant United States. Sheikh Hasina herself is responsible for the misdeeds committed by the terrorists she unleashed against Professor Muhammad Yunus,” he wrote.

Shafiqur also urged the government to take appropriate action promptly, saying the incident showed that those who had fled the country were continuing their alleged activities abroad.

Videos circulating on social media show Yunus leaving Terminal 8 in a wheelchair when several Bangladeshi expatriates shouted remarks at him.

The protesters were heard calling him a “terrorist” and accusing him of killing Bangladeshis and thousands of police officers. They also shouted, “Go back” and “You destroyed democracy”.

Security personnel quickly escorted Yunus away from the scene. He and Lamia Morshed, who was accompanying him, subsequently moved inside the airport, according to reports.
