The district office of the National Citizen Party (NCP) in Bogura was set on fire late Wednesday night, according to party officials.
The incident took place sometime after midnight at the party’s office near Altafunnesa Playground in the town. A video of the incident has since circulated on social media.
The footage appears to show three young men splashing a flammable liquid, possibly oil or petrol, inside the office before setting it on fire, while another person records the incident on a mobile phone. Their faces are not clearly visible in the video.
Bogura district NCP member secretary Sultan Mahmud said the incident occurred between 1am and 1:30am on Thursday. He said party members discovered it in the morning and informed the authorities. Police told them that they were looking into the matter.
Mahmud said the party had contacted its central leadership and would decide on further action based on its instructions.
He alleged that supporters of the ousted authoritarian government might be behind the incident, adding that attempts were being made to marginalise the party, which emerged from the uprising. However, he said it was too early to identify anyone specifically and called for an investigation.
Bogura district police media spokesperson and Additional Superintendent of Police Atowar Rahman said police were aware of the incident but had not yet received a written complaint. He said legal action would be taken following an investigation if a complaint was filed.
