Former law adviser to the interim government, Dr Asif Nazrul, has urged ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina to return to Bangladesh immediately rather than waiting until December to surrender before a court.
In a verified Facebook post on Saturday titled “Welcome, Sheikh Hasina,” Nazrul said both the interim government and the current BNP-led administration have formally approached India to facilitate her return for legal proceedings.
“If you truly intend to return, why wait until December? Come back now,” he wrote, adding that Hasina owes answers to the people and the courts over several major incidents, including the July uprising, in which hundreds of people were killed.
Nazrul also raised questions about incidents during her tenure, such as the BDR mutiny, the Shapla Chattar incident, alleged extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances, corruption, and money laundering.
He questioned why citizens were deprived of voting rights for a prolonged period and called for accountability on governance issues.
He further noted that while Hasina reportedly ensured the safety of her family members by sending them abroad during the July movement, many grassroots leaders and activists of her party are now facing legal uncertainty.
“If you have genuinely decided to return, do not delay. Face the law and present your position in court,” he said. He also warned against making repeated announcements about returning if there is no concrete plan, saying it could mislead party supporters and expose them to unnecessary risks.
Hasina, who is currently in exile, recently told Reuters in a phone interview that she plans to return to Bangladesh in December to surrender before the court. She also called on party leaders abroad to return alongside her.
