Awami League chief and former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is currently staying in India and has been sentenced to death, cannot return to Bangladesh to surrender unless there is a mutual agreement between the governments of Bangladesh and India, according to Mohammad Aminul Islam, the Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT).

Speaking to journalists at his office on Sunday, the Chief Prosecutor said that Sheikh Hasina is currently living in India under the authority of the Indian government and cannot return to Bangladesh at her own discretion like an ordinary citizen.

“She will have to return through diplomatic and legal procedures agreed upon by both Bangladesh and India. The moment she arrives in Bangladesh, she will be arrested at the airport and taken into custody,” he said.

Responding to another question, Aminul Islam also announced that the investigation into the case related to the killings during Hefazat-e-Islam’s rally at Shapla Chattar in Motijheel on May 5, 2013, has been completed.

He said the investigation report will be submitted to the International Crimes Tribunal on July 21.
