Staff Correspondent: BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Monday said the government and political parties should reach a consensus through dialogue on the proposed July Charter, while legal and constitutional amendments required for its implementation should be completed without delay.
He made the remarks while addressing a seminar titled “July Memories and Youth Startups: The Promise of Bangladesh” at the International University of Business Agriculture and Technology (IUBAT) in Uttara, Dhaka.
Rizvi said the political changes of July-August had created some space for the practice of democracy in the country, but warned that democracy could not be sustained without a minimum level of understanding among political parties.
“If political parties fail to build consensus, anti-democratic forces may once again find an opportunity to re-emerge,” he said.
The BNP leader alleged that the previous government had weakened key democratic institutions, including the Election Commission and the judiciary, while suppressing opposition political forces through various measures.
He stressed that issues requiring legislative or constitutional changes should be addressed promptly through dialogue and mutual agreement to ensure the successful implementation of the July Charter.
Among others, Dhaka North BNP Member Secretary Mostafa Zaman, Reserved Seat MP Ferdousi Ahmed (Misty), AB Party leader Engineer Abu Sayeed Chanchal, Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal Vice-President Dr Zahidul Kabir, and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal Vice-President Dr Touhidur Rahman Auwal, along with leaders and activists of the BNP and its associate bodies, attended the seminar.
