Khelafat Majlish has formally withdrawn from the Jamaat-e-Islami-led 11-party alliance, saying the coalition had effectively fulfilled its purpose after the national election.
The decision was taken at the party’s third general session of its Central Majlish-e-Shura held on Saturday morning at the Institution of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh (IDEB) auditorium in the capital, according to a statement issued by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Engineer Abdul Hafiz Khasru.
The statement said Khelafat Majlish would no longer participate in any programmes organised under the banner of the 11-party alliance. However, the party said it remained open to joining a broader alliance in the future if required in the interest of the country, the nation and Islam.
According to the party, the 11-party alliance was formed primarily as an electoral understanding, and its relevance had effectively ended after the completion of the election.
“Although Khelafat Majlish participated in several alliance programmes after the election, it has now decided to refrain from all future activities of the 11-party alliance,” the statement said.
The party added that it would continue efforts to build a wider political unity whenever necessary.
The meeting was chaired by Khelafat Majlish Ameer Maulana Abdul Basit Azad and conducted by Secretary General Dr Ahmad Abdul Qader. The meeting was attended by senior leaders, including Naib-e-Ameer Maulana Sakhawat Hossain, Maulana Ahmad Ali Qasemi, Professor Abdullah Farid, Professor Sirajul Haque, Maulana Syed Ferdous Bin Ishaq, Mufti Abdul Hamid, Joint Secretary General Advocate Jahangir Hossain, Muhammad Muntashir Ali, ABM Sirajul Mamun, Dr Mostafizur Rahman Faisal, Professor Md Abdul Jalil, Organising Secretary Advocate Mizanur Rahman and Mufti Abul Hasan MP.
Earlier, following a divisional rally in Chattogram on June 13, Khelafat Majlish formally informed the alliance not to use the party’s name or those of its leaders in future rally banners or promotional materials.
