The government has formed a cabinet committee, headed by the Finance Minister, to revise the country’s Visa Policy 2006 with the aim of making the entry and exit procedures for foreign nationals more efficient and streamlined.
The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting held at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Thursday, with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in the chair.
The committee has been tasked with reviewing the existing visa policy and recommending amendments to create a more modern, efficient and well-regulated immigration system.
Briefing reporters after the meeting, Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Ghani said the proposed Visa Policy 2026 is designed to attract foreign investment, promote international trade and business, facilitate the entry of skilled professionals, encourage tourism and the hospitality industry, and strengthen technology and knowledge transfer.
He said the new policy also seeks to safeguard national security while maintaining an appropriate balance in Bangladesh’s international diplomatic relations.
The revised policy will be guided by the principle of reciprocity in managing international travel and is intended to establish a modern, service-oriented immigration framework, he added.
The Ministry of Home Affairs will provide secretarial support to the cabinet committee during the policy review process, the Cabinet Secretary said.
