Argentina captain Lionel Messi has donated €80,000 (around Tk 11.4 million) to support the reconstruction of areas devastated by recent wildfires near Spain’s capital, Madrid.
The donation was confirmed by Madrid regional president Isabel Díaz Ayuso, who thanked Messi in a post on X. She said the football star had contributed to rebuilding the Sierra Oeste region, which was badly affected by weeks of destructive fires.
Ayuso also expressed confidence that the people of Madrid would warmly welcome Messi and show their appreciation for his humanitarian gesture.
Messi’s donation comes as Spanish authorities continue recovery efforts in the wildfire-hit region. Although the blaze, which burned for nearly two weeks, has been brought under control, emergency teams remain on alert and are closely monitoring vulnerable areas to prevent fresh outbreaks.
