Another star has emerged from the ranks of the underdogs following the World Cup.

His name is Yan Diomande. The 19-year-old Ivory Coast winger has completed his move from RB Leipzig to Real Madrid, becoming the most expensive player in the club’s history and the most expensive African footballer.

Reports put the deal at around €125 million, potentially rising to €140 million with add-ons.

Diomande, whose favourite player is Cristiano Ronaldo, has already drawn comparisons with Lionel Messi for his explosive style and attacking ability.

His rise has been remarkably swift. After brief spells with Leganés B and the senior side in 2025, he joined RB Leipzig and made a major impact in his first season. He now finds himself at Real Madrid just over a year after beginning his professional career in Spain.

The move is part of Real Madrid’s plans to strengthen their squad under new coach José Mourinho after two seasons without a major trophy. The Spanish giants have also brought in Marc Cucurella, Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konaté and Denzel Dumfries during the summer transfer window.

The transfer eclipses the €103 million Real Madrid paid Borussia Dortmund for Jude Bellingham in 2023, making Diomande the club’s record signing. His move also surpasses Nicolas Pépé’s reported €80 million transfer from Lille to Arsenal in 2019 as the highest fee paid for an African player.

Diomande’s journey to Madrid has been remarkably rapid. Leipzig signed him from Leganés for around €20 million in July 2025, and only a year later the club has secured a potential return of up to €140 million.

Before leaving Leipzig, Diomande posted an emotional farewell message on Instagram, expressing gratitude to the German club for believing in him when he had only a handful of professional appearances.

“I am infinitely grateful,” he wrote, recalling how Leipzig gave him the confidence and opportunity to prove himself at the highest level of European football.

He described joining Real Madrid as the fulfilment of a childhood dream, thanking Leipzig for helping make the move possible despite his existing contract.

At just 19, Diomande has gone from a relatively unknown prospect to one of the most expensive teenagers in football history. His extraordinary rise now enters its biggest chapter at the Santiago Bernabéu.
