Adam Abbas, who developed in Manchester United’s academy and later played for Burnley’s Under-18 side, has joined the Bangladesh Under-20 national team camp.
The England-based winger is eligible to represent Bangladesh through his maternal grandparents, who are Bangladeshi. His mother is British and his father is Jamaican.
After completing the necessary birth registration and passport formalities, Abbas joined the national youth team and took part in training at the Shamsul Huda Academy in Jashore on Sunday.
His new teammates warmly welcomed the winger as he began preparations with the squad.
Abbas is expected to be part of Bangladesh’s squad for next month’s AFC U-20 Asian Cup qualifiers in Uzbekistan. Bangladesh have been drawn in a group with hosts Uzbekistan, India and Syria.
Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) Development Committee chairman Naser Shahriar Zahedi had earlier said Abbas would be considered for the team after reviewing video footage of his performances.
The coaching staff will now have the opportunity to assess the 20-year-old winger directly during the training camp.
Interest among expatriate footballers in representing Bangladesh has grown significantly since midfielder Hamza Choudhury began playing for the national team. Other expatriate players, including Shamit Som and the Sullivan brothers, have also earned opportunities with Bangladesh.
Abbas will now look to impress the coaching staff and secure a permanent place in Bangladesh’s national setup.
